Contrary to popular belief, Mother’s Day, the third largest card-sending holiday in the US, is not a holiday that was created by the greeting card industry, but has its origins in ancient Greece where it was celebrated each spring in honor of Rhea, the Mother of the Gods.

Honoring Mary on Mothering Sunday

In 17th century England, the celebration took on a religious significance, becoming a day that early Christians set aside to honor Mary, the mother of Christ. Eventually all mothers were included and the day became known as Mothering Sunday, because it was a day that celebrated both mothers and the church. In the UK, Mothering Sunday is celebrated on the 4th Sunday after lent.

Julia Ward Howe and the Mother’s Day of Peace

In America however, Mothering Sunday was all but forgotten by the English colonists when they arrived here in the early 1600s. It wasn’t until the mid-19th century that the idea was briefly resurrected by Julia Ward Howe, an abolitionist and social activist best known for penning the words to the “Battle Hymn of the Republic.”

In 1870, Howe declared the first modern “Mother’s Day,” composing what is widely believed to be the original Mothers’ Day proclamation in the US.

Howe was also a pacifist as well as an active participant in the women’s suffrage movement and two years later, combining her passions for both peace and motherhood, Howe declared June 2 a “Mother’s Day for Peace.” She envisioned the day being celebrated every year on that same date, which it was for the next 10 years. But unlike today’s Mother’s Day celebrations, which typically honor the contributions of mothers to their families and communities, Howe saw it as a day for women to unite against war.

Anna Jarvis and the Modern Mother’s Day

The Mother’s Day holiday as we know it today is actually credited to a woman named Anna Jarvis. Jarvis was the daughter of Ann Marie Reeves Jarvis, an Appalachian homemaker who was an inspiration to Howe because of her work in improving relationships between neighbors in the north and south after the Civil War.

Although she was educated at Female Seminary in Wheeling, WV and taught for a while at a school, Jarvis returned home to care for her sick mother. After her mother’s death in 1905 Anna Jarvis dedicated her life to creating a day that honored mothers—living and dead.

She took up a letter writing campaign and brought her idea up to everyone she could. Eventually a local church, Andrews Methodist Church in Grafton, WV, where Jarvis had taught Sunday school classes for 20 years, took notice and is credited with the first Mother’s Day observance.

President Wilson Officially Proclaims Mother’s Day

Anna Jarvis’ persistence paid off and in 1914 President Woodrow Wilson officially proclaimed Mother’s Day an official holiday in honor of motherhood and is celebrated in the US on the second Sunday in May.

Ironically however, Jarvis was a spinster who had no children of her own.

And for the record, Hallmark did not begin making cards for the holiday in the 1920s.

Happy Mother’s Day!

A supernumerary nipple (also known as a third nipple, accessory nipple, polythelia or polymastia) is an additional nipple occurring in mammals, including humans. Often mistaken for moles, supernumerary nipples are diagnosed at a rate of 2% in women, lower in men. The nipples appear along the two vertical “milk lines”, which start in the armpit on each side, run down through the typical nipples and end at the groin. They are classified into eight levels of completeness from a simple patch of hair to a milk-bearing breast in miniature. Polythelia refers to the presence of an additional nipple alone while polymastia denotes the much rarer presence of additional mammary glands.

Notable examples

* Famous Nazi Rudolf Hess
* Actor and singer Mark Wahlberg has a supernumerary nipple below his normal left nipple. It was, however, airbrushed out of the Calvin Klein underwear ads in which Wahlberg modeled.

* The model Masuimi Max has four nipples. She frequently models nude, revealing the supernumary nipples are visible as small, symmetrical freckle-like marks between her breasts and armpits, along the milk line.
* Anne Boleyn, second wife to Henry VIII of England, and mother of Elizabeth I, may have had a third nipple or even a third breast.
* Carrie Underwood said in her first American Idol audition, when Paula wasn’t present, that she had a third nipple but had it removed even though it just looked like a mole.

* Lily Allen has a third nipple

Haunters are an ingenious bunch. They’re always thinking of ways to make their props and decorations more realistic, elaborate, and impressive. While their efforts are no doubt scaring the pants off their victims, sometimes simpler isbetter. How often to do you hear that “gore isn’t scary” and that mood or “hinting at the monster” is what really gave someone the chills?

I stumbled upon this Hand in a Box prop, and could immediately imagine the shock of those who unwittingly pushed the red button. “…the observers are supposed to push the ON button. After a while the lid of the trunk opens, a hand comes out and turns off the machine. The trunk closes – that’s it!”. Normally I try to present project ideas that come with at least a few instructions, but this simplistic prop seemed very worthy of mention anyway. Imagine this chest sitting on a pedestal at your front door. Before knocking to get their candy, Trick-or-Treaters would invariably push the button and scream as the hand shot out and slammed the lid. I am probably far too motivated by the screams of kids, but that thought is inspiring me to try my first pneumatic prop.

The largest super-tanker built ever is named Knock Nevis. It is well known as Seawise Giant, Happy Giant or Jahre Viking, but with changing of ship-owners and its function are coming new names. Now the vessel is operating as a storage tank to the platforms in Qatar. That was dictated, because of its large measurements. The vessel has a deadweight of 565,000 metric tons, a length of 458 meters and a beam of 69 meters. When it is fully loaded it cannot pass through the English channel, which is 32 miles wide, and what about Suez Channel or Panama Channel. That is why, the ship-owner decided to use it as a immobile storage tank offshore in the Qatar, where it is more profitable for the owner.

World’s largest ship, MS “Knock Nevis”
It is 458 meters long, sticking 25 meters deep and weighs 564,763 dead weight tons

But it’s probably the end of the giant ship MS “Knock Nevis”, perhaps better known as the MS “Jahre Viking”.

MS “Jahre Viking” was the world’s biggest supertanker. After a long roller-coaster career as a tanker,
was it retired years spent as a floating storage vessel for Fred Olsen Production under the name
MS “Knock Nevis”, And now it’s the end.

MS “Knock Nevis” looking for work in Brazil and India, but the “base case” is that the ship is a scraping
candidate, said CEO Jørn T. Røkaas Fred Olsen Production at the Pareto Securities Oil & Offshore
Seminar Thursday, according to news agency TDN Finans.

When the ship worked as a supertanker, it was too large for the English Channel. Fully loaded the ship is
25 meters deep, as the Suez and Panama canals, was also sidelined. Although most ports were simply
too small for this giant ship.

The ship was in a class by itself. The largest tankers in the world called very large crude carriers
(VLCC) and Ultra Large Crude Carriers (ULCC). VLCCer is up to 320,000 dwt ULCC while normally used
on ships of 320,000 deadweight tons. “Knock Nevis” however, is its own class width of incredible 564,763
deadweight tons.

Ship’s history
The ship was originally commissioned by a Greek shipping magnate who went bankrupt before delivery.
Sumitomo shipyard sold the ship in 1979 to to a Hong Kong company to cover its costs. The buyer
wanted to make the ship even bigger than the planned 480,000 dødvekttonnene, so first in 1981,
the ship was launched under the name MS Seawise Giant.

A few years later was an disaster, the ship was hit by missiles in the Iran-Iraq war. After the war,
was the ship was repaired by it’s owner Jørgen Jahre, and in 1991 it was again launched under the name
MS Jahre Viking”. In 2004 the ship was bought by First Olsen Tankers and converted to an FSO – a floating
storage vessel in a field in Qatar.

The largest vessels in service today is MS ‘Emma Maersk’ and her sister vessel MS Eugen Maersk. ”

deadweight: The target of a ship’s carrying capacity, ie the number of tons (1000 kg) cargo, fuel,
water, food, etc. at it’s maximum depth a ship may cause.

Thus, it is probably over for a bit of Norwegian shipping history. MS “Knock Nevis” as the ship is called
today is almost half a mile long – 458 meters. For comparison, one of the world’s tallest buildings -
the Petronas Towers in Malaysia – is 424 meters.

Who would have thought that this could actually be true, but it is. Dr. Seuss came out with the book ‘The Seven Lady Godivas”. I was actually in shock when I found out. I really had to do a little research. Here is some information that I found.

One hundred and eight years ago today, the world welcomed Theodor Seuss Geisel, better-known as Dr. Seuss — legendary children’s book author, radical ideologist, lover of reading. Among his many creative feats is a fairly unknown, fairly scandalous one: In 1939, when Geisel left Vanguard for Random House, he had one condition for his new publisher, Bennett Cerf — that he would let Geisel do an “adult” book first. The result was The Seven Lady Godivas: The True Facts Concerning History’s Barest Family, which tells the story of nudist sisters who, after their father’s death, pledge not to wed until each of them has “brought to the light of the world some new and worthy Horse Truth, of benefit to man.”
Source

I’d have to say that Dr. Seuss drawing nude illustrations is super cool haha It looks like he took the right turn at that fork in the road. His career could have taken a completely different path. He could have become like Hugh Hefner, who knows?

I’m asking myself the same question. Why did I even post this? Because I’m a dork, that’s why….

Here is a list of all the different types of chicken throughout the world. I wonder how many different types of chicken I’ve eaten? How about you. Everything tastes like chicken, it must be because there are so many different types lol That’s totally not true. Anyway, if you’re interested in farm livestock and want to know all the different species of chicken there are, then here is a pretty good list I got from a farmer friend.

Americana Chickens

Color and Appearance

Unlike most types of chickens, Americana’s are muffed and bearded, with full tails and slate or black legs depending on the variety.

Eight colors are officially recognized: Black, Blue, Blue Wheaten, Brown Red, Buff, Silver, Wheaten and White.

Origin of Americana Chickens

The Ameraucana (popularized as “Americana”) was developed in the USA from the non-standard “Easter Egger” chicken whose ancestors were South American Araucanas. It was accepted as an official breed in 1984.

Size of Americana Chickens

There are both bantam and large types of chickens of the Ameraucana breed.

• Bantam weights are 30 oz (0.85 kg) for cocks and 26 oz (0.74 kg) for hens.

• The large Americanas weigh in at 6.5 lb (3 kg) for cocks and 5.5 lb (2.5 kg) for hens. Bantam cocks weigh 30 ounces and bantam hens weigh 26 ounces while large fowl cocks weigh 6 1/2 pounds and large fowl hens weigh 5 1/2 pounds

Temperament of Americana Chickens

These birds are usually quiet and adapt well to confinement.

Uses of the Americana Chickens

Of chickens that lay colored eggs, Ameraucana chickens produce an above average number of blue/green eggs.

Their white skin and relatively early maturity makes the roosters reasonable eating birds too.

They are good brooders and are cold hardy.

Andalusian Chickens

Color and Appearance

Often called the Blue Andalusian for the color accepted for showing by the American Poultry Association, they also appear in Splash (mottled) and Black.

Although the only color pattern recognized by the American Poultry Association is Blue, when you cross two blues you will get some whites and some blacks.

Origin of Andalusian Chickens

The Andalusian is a types of chickens originally bred in Spain and England in the mid 1800’s.

Size of Andalusian Chickens

• Standard: 5.5 lb (2.4 kg)

• Bantam: 1.75 lb (0.8 kg)

Temperament of Andalusian Chickens

Flighty but can adapt to confinement. Do better on free range.

Uses of Andalusian Chickens

Fair layers of white eggs, laying up to 160 eggs per year.

They have white skin, mature early and are economical eaters, so are reasonable eating birds too. A hardy and heat tolerant bird not as well suited to cold climates. Generally does not go broody.

Aracauna Chickens

Color and Appearance

One of those rare and different breeds of chickens that lay colored eggs, Aracaunas have unusual feather tufts near their ears and no tails.

They come in a variety of colors: Lavender, Blue, Black/Red, Silver Duckwing, Golden Duckwing, Blue/Red, Pyle, Crele, Spangled, Cuckoo, and Black and White.

Origin of Aracauna Chickens

Originating in Chile, the ancestors of the modern Araucana chicken were kept by the indigenous Araucanians Indians.

Size of Aracauna Chickens

The Aracauna is medium to large in size.

Temperament of Aracauna Chickens

They are quiet types of chickens, docile and trusting.

Uses of Aracauna Chickens

Reliable layers of medium sized, blue eggs. However, the gene that produces tufting is lethal, so that breeding two tufted birds together results in 50% with tufts, 25% of the brood dying in the shell, and 25% having no tufts.

Australorp Chickens

Color and Appearance

Australorps are large and soft feathered. Glossy black Australorp chickens were the original color. However, other color types of chickens have been developed and are blue and splash.

Origin of Black Australorp chickens

Black Australorp chickens were developed in Australia in the early 1900’s from Orpingtons imported from the UK, in a bid to improve on their utility. They were known as Black Utility Orpingtons.

Size of Australorp chickens

• Large Australorp:

Roosters should be between 3.9 kg (8.6 lbs) and 4.7 kg (10.4 lb), while hens weigh in between 3.7 kg (8.2 lb) and 4.5 kg (9.9 lb).

• Bantam Australorp:

Bantam roosters weigh from 1.8 kg (4 lb) to 2.3 kg (5 lb), with hens weighing between 1.7 kg (3.7 lb) and 2.2 kg (4.8 lb).

Temperament of Australorp chickens

Sussex Chickens

Because of their black meat and skin most peoples of European descent shun them as table birds, but they are highly prized for this purpose in China.

Silkies are one of those delicate types of chickens that do poorly in extremes of temperature or inclement weather because of their lack of hard outer feathers.

Polish Chickens

Wyandottes were developed as another of the dual-purpose types of chickens. They are moderately early maturers with big breasts, so go well in the pot. They are also good layers, producing around 200 eggs per year. They occasionally go broody and make good mothers. However, their thick feathering about the vent area is apt to go daggy with faeces, so may need regular washing.
